Karol Mossakowski, Improvisations

Karol Mossakowski, organiste en résidence à Radio France depuis septembre 2019, enregistre son 1er album à l’orgue Gerhard Grenzing de l’Auditorium, avec un choix original de transcriptions d’œuvres de Bach Suite Française, Mozart Adagio et Fugue en Ut mineur, Mendelssohn Variations Sérieuses et Liszt Méphisto Waltz.
Pour faciliter l’écoute de ce programme fortement contrasté, Karol Mossakowski s’est inspiré des pianistes du XIXe siècle qui improvisaient volontiers quelques mesures pour passer d’un rivage à un autre où régnera une autre tonalité, une autre atmosphère. Par ses courtes méditations qui se souviennent de l’œuvre que l’on a abordée, ou préparent à celle qui pointe à l’horizon, l’interprète ne fait ici que prolonger sa mission : celle de nous faire entendre la musique telle qu’il l’entend lui-même, autrement dit nous prêter quelques instants ses oreilles.

Karol Mossakowski est reconnu tant pour ses qualités d’interprète que d’improvisateur ; il mène une carrière internationale très active dans ces deux champs qu’il ne cesse de nourrir mutuellement. Il se produit dans des salles telles que l’Auditorium de Radio France, la Philharmonie de Paris, Le Forum National de la Musique à Wrocław, la Philharmonie de Varsovie, l’Auditorium de Lyon, la Philharmonie de Moscou, le Théâtre Mariinsky, Bruxelles BOZAR, le Palais Montcalm à Québec, et est régulièrement invité par des formations comme l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Wrocław, l’Orchestre National de France, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Bruxelles et l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Varsovie sous la direction de Myung-WhunChung, Kent Nagano, Mikko Franck, Giancarlo Guerrero, Cristian Măcelaru ou Stéphane Denève. Après des études musicales en Pologne, il intègre les classes d’orgue, d’improvisation et d’écriture au Conservatoire de Paris. Il obtient le Premier prix du concours du Printemps de Prague et le Grand Prix de Chartres. Actuellement organiste titulaire des grandes-orgues de la Cathédrale de Lille et professeur d’improvisation à l’École Supérieure de Musique du Pays Basque (Musikene), il est également artiste en résidence à Radio France depuis septembre 2019.

Karol Mossakowski, organist in residence at Radio France since September 2019, has recorded his first CD on the Gerhard Grenzing organ of the Auditorium, with an original selection of transcriptions of works by Bach "The French Suiten°5", Mozart "Adagio and Fugue in C minor", Mendelssohn "Variations Sérieuses" and Liszt "Mephisto Waltz".
In order to facilitate the listening of this highly contrasted programme, Karol Mossakowski draws inspiration from the pianists of the 19th century who were quick to improvise in order to sail from one shore to another, where they could carry on in a different tonality, a different atmosphere. Through his short meditations that recall the work just heard or prepare us for the work on the horizon, the artist fulfils his mission: to let us hear the music as he hears it himself, to let us hear through his own ears for a brief moment.

Karol Mossakowski is renowned for both his interpretation and improvisation skills; his international career focuses on both areas of practice as they mutually enrich one another. He performs in venues such as the Radio France Auditorium, the Paris Philharmonie, the Lyon Auditorium, Wroclaw’s National Forum of Music, the Warsaw Philharmonie, the Moscow Philharmonie, the Mariinsky Theatre, BOZAR Brussels, MÜPA Budapest, Palais Montcalm in Québec. He is regularly invited for concerts with orchestras including Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Bruxelles, the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra, and Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, performing under the direction of such conductors: Myung-Whun Chung, Kent Nagano, Mikko Franck, Giancarlo Guerrero, Cristian Măcelaru, and Stéphane Denève.After studying in Poland he entered the Paris Conservatory,where he studied organ, improvisation and composition. He was awarded First Prize at the International Prague Spring Competition and the Grand Prix de Chartres; He is titular organist of Lille’s Cathedral, and professor of improvisation at the Higher School of Music in San Sebastián (Musikene). He has been the Organist in Residence at Radio France since 2019.
